And now, you’ve given away the most precious thing you have, your virginity. And real cheap to boot. I guess I never really knew you…you’ve had me fooled for years. 5. Choosing Two proposals on graduation eve led Caroline to choose the wrong man and spend the next twelve years as a trophy wife. Quentin was smooth, combining elements of parental pressure, vivid depiction of a secure future, then capped by an ‘in the moment’ seduction that night. But Tim was the one who knew who she was, and her touchstone. Tim’s future appeared more at risk…a writer seeking a voice. Tim was addicted to her, and entered a potentially deep spiral of depression following his surprise rejection. Laura, a pro-bono psychologist, herself with obsessive/compulsive tendencies, rescued him, and they had a love child, Eva Twelve years later, two things happened almost simultaneously: Caroline strikes out on her own, securing a trial talk radio job. Then, she discovers that her oldest child, Andrew, is Tim’s because of a common RH negative blood factor. She locates and e-mails Tim who comes immediately and uninvited from D.C. to New Brunswick to meet his son. Caroline is immediately conflicted by her strong latent feelings for Tim and, by her immaturity, how she ruined his life.
  6. Consequences Adam Haven came home from Nashville planning a marriage proposal to Sara Williams and expecting to enjoy the happiest evening of his life. Instead, he was met by Sara and her sister April with a DNA-supported accusation of April’s rape the night before. Sara in an instant ended her relationship with Adam, no more words, allowing no defense opportunity, and they didn’t speak for fifteen years. Within two weeks of the accusation, Sara became involved with Adam’s identical twin brother, Sam Haven, who had been jealous of Sara and Adam’s twelve-year friendship, all along. Adam was shunned in Saxville TN as a sexual predator and was relegated to a laboring job in the family business. Sara and Sam married soon thereafter, Two children were born…Stormi and Christopher, these names mirroring those originally chosen by Sara and Adam together for their future family. As their homes were on the same property, Adam observed daily the life that he would have lived with Sara. After fifteen years, Sara inadvertently found Adam’s ring set and a time-dated receipt proving Adam’s innocence in a dresser drawer she was cleaning in the Haven’s family home destined for rental.. She then learned that identical twins have the same DNA.
  7. First-Sight Abby Markham, and Hogan Richards reached for the same library book, exchanged apologies, names, and then immediately departed. And half the energy of one drained into the other person, immediately conflicting reason and compelling action. The very next night Hogan led a community-wide revival rally. A boy, Kyle Lawson, approached Hogan asking for piano lessons and introduced him to his parents…bingo, he found her. His mother was Abby. When asked, Kyle whispered that she was to have been a concert pianist and could play anything and everything in any key. He put another piano back-to-back and coaxed her to the stage. He led. Then she synced by memory and ear as an echo of increasing voracity. Everyone was blown away by this. The next weekend Abby was invited to a faculty tea. On the way home, the job of mentoring four students was offered and accepted to start on Monday. This first day, Kyle came to find his mom. Hearing music he entered the room and was virtually laser connected to the girl on the bench. Normally shy, he immediately went to her and they only saw each other. He invited her home to study. Her name was Jonnie Anderson. They studied late and she slept over…with all propriety. Abby found her in the morning in the kitchen. Abby discovered that Jonnie was the daughter of the boy she left dehind, Lyle Anderson, and her former best friend Gina Riley.
  8. Infrastructures “You would look at what I’ve accomplished and call me a success…maybe even a Horatio Alger sequel. And your first reaction may be to look to me as a hero…someone to emulate. Before you do this, I would ask you to consider the flip side.” I let the workplace control my life and prioritize the choices I’ve made. I have not been my own person…really…early-on a whore to the corporation, and later married to my own business, more so than my family.  And the years have passed, and have also passed me by like a thief in the night. Waking, realizing my life is largely gone, I walk on the egg-shells of broken relationships and shattered dreams as I approach the alter to which I have bowed. I am now changing what remains. I have lived my life in the light of perception; and, this has been my reality. So what do I stand for, and what do I have to show for my lLooking back, I have missed the joy of many simple things including shared relations with people, experiencing human things…both frail and strong, with curiosity and wonder, unconditional love, and the gift of struggle and sacrifice. My heros have been centered on material things and success…on luck and fortune, on innovation and intellectual property.Yes…I have given too little to humanity; and perhaps a little more to technology anphysics wherever that is going, and to what ava I now know that just like our forebears were slaves to survival and the whims of nature, I and perhaps many others have been and are now slaves to the unknowable technology and the products it spawns. The conveniences of technology application have rendered me mindless in many respects; and, at best, superficial in thinking. I now wonder what part of me is truly mine….perhaps none at all. So finally I return as today’s prodigal son, asking now only to serve to the good of preserving the culture around me. As such, and in conclusion, I have advice to give you which is also the advice to myself. Always put your family first, before work or personal pleasure, as the only true resource other than God is the children. And we are stewards of the children. Put others before yourself, and you will then find yourself free and growing. Build your life to give, and you will have to work very hard to give all that you will then have.Should you forego your dreams of success and hard work? Of course not. But, provide for yourselves a life and set these priorities to guide you. One fact to which II can assure you, your life will not go according to plan. So be ready. There will be two steps in the process. The first is where you take control of your life, and lose your real freedom. And the second is where you recognize what is important and regain your freedom.Congratulations on your graduation!” Dan Bowen then stepped from the podium, soon to watch the parade of graduates file by including both his son and his grandson
  9. Jessica’s Promise     Luke could never get beyond that years-ago  moment,  and he had been  monogamous ever since. It had been a living real dream. Instead he focused, driven to finish his education in architecture. They, Luke and Jess, had once talked about he designing a building structure. and she designing the interior. Where was she? Had she finished her education, had she married? Luke had no way to find her. But, she could have found him— she had found him—because his parents still lived in Lisbon, Iowa. He often wondered why.Luke became an expert archer and was invited to the regional Olympic trials in Dallas. On the third day, he stood next to an unusually-skilled girl. The girl inadvertently dropped an arrow, and both reached for it. Luke noticed the ring on the girl’s finger, a pewter band with a brilliant ruby inset between raised pewter arrows. At first glance, the ring appeared to be similar to a ring he had given Jess years earlier just before her parents moved away. After the competition: “Hi, I’m Luke.”  “Hello. Hi, I’m Gina.” “May we share a coffee? There’s a small cafe with outdoor seating, just across the field.” “Sure.”  They walked the hundred yards or so, took seats, and ordered..    “I admire your ring, It looks similar to one I’m familiar with from years ago.” She removed the ring and hands it to him for examination. Closely Inscribed on the inside band were the words ‘Luke and Jess forever.’ “When did you get this ring?”  Luke asked. “It was given to me on my sixteenth birthday. I was told that it was from my father.”    Luke broke into a cold sweat, his hands quavering.  He asked, “What is your full name?”        “It’s Gina Jessica Carter.” Luke was struck dumb, staring away, then at the floor, then finally eye-to-eye. “I am Luke Carter, and I gave this ring to your mother, Jessica Ryan, on her sixteenth birthday.”
  10. Shattered Relations     This is the story of how conspired meddling of three parent sets affected the lives of six persons as observed and subsequently healed over a year’s period twenty years downstream. In particular, the focus is on, then, Lainey Ivers and Nathan Hale. All six were raised in Gun Barrel City, Texas. A twenty-year reunion at Cedar Creek Lake marked the current relational nexus and vantage point for remembering and viewing individual and relational life paths. A week of remembering converged on the final night…reenactment of their senior prom with original dates if possible. Lainey and Nathan, Lyle and Chewryl were among the original pairings, Ago, post prom and into college, Nathan had chosen Georgie Williams over Lainey and Lyle had chosen Lainey over Cheryl…these choices abetted by parents.
  11. The Compassion Request      John Henry Sullivan was a psychological deserter in Vietnam, early in the war–sheltered in a remote village near the Cambodian border in a Buddhist monastery. Regaining his strength and psyche, he formed and led a group of insurgents raiding prison camps in the north leading released captives to safety in the south. One prisoner was Lilea Mingh Phong, renegade daughter of the indigenous Viet Cong leader, who became his ally, and loverWithout country–and as the war ended with the US leaving, and the fall of Saigon–John and Lilea became smugglers, bringing much-needed food and black market medical supplies into a unified Vietnam. Always on the run, pursued by both the CIA and Viet Intelligence, Lilea became pregnant and triplet girls were born. To give them  life’s chance, John arranged for adoptions through a Hong Kong agency. Gone, but not forgotten, on their 17th birthday, he took a chance and sent each an ankle bracelet “blind” through the agency with only an unsigned note:  “…wear this always and proudly as a sign of your heritage and destiny…”  The bracelets were recrafted from ankle irons used on prisoners during the war; and, were inset with birthstones–one, two, and three in order of their birth. This is the story of these girls…how they found each other, the struggled search for their biological parents, international intrigue triggered by this same search involving secrets of the Vietnam war, belated vindication, and the discovery of their destiny
  12. The Grey Sable Confluence       Implosion of the Soviet Union in June, 1990, was widely viewed as proof that Communism ultimately fails if placed under enough economic pressure…in this case, the triggering event of countering Reagan’s Star Wars initiative in Eastern Europe. This novel suggests that this fall was not at all inevitable and occurred only because of a fortuitous chain of events in which a massive international shift of wealth into the Union was averted, then lost, in the nick of time.  Such money flow …a harbinger of the onset of the now global marketplace…anticipated global opening of the Soviet market and export of much-needed natural resources. The time is one of escalating technology…and cost. The time is one of an increasing and seemingly insatiable appetite for cocaine. The time is one of an awaking Middle East in a growing and increasing apparent economic disparity with Israel. The time marks the beginning of Asian acquisition of U.S. technology and real assets. Three diverse story lines highlight these times as well as the governing influence of money over principle, technology over politics, and resources over culture in human affairs. The convergence of these stories is expected and inevitable. This is the story of Grey Sable…a great plan to revitalize the Soviet economy without conflict and to enable a metered and planned awaking of the Middle East…by the country with the most to gain…or lose…because of both European and Asian cultural faces. The novel provides a plausible and technically-accurate scenario of events, capturing the issues of the times.  This is how it all could have started. In many instances.  this is what has happen since.
  13. Tracking The Path of Love     Sam Hodges and Sara Holland fell deeply in love during that freshman year in Austin. For Sara, that marked the beginning of her life. But they were both told that a serious relationship that could lead to marriage was impossible. Sara’s father was a well known evangelist of the Baptist persuasion in Austin, and Sam’s father was a strict Roman Catholic congressman from the ‘hill country.’ When Sara became pregnant, money changed hands with the understanding that the child’s paternity should never be revealed and all communication between Sara and Sam cease forever. A rebound never occurred for Sara. She had lost her anchor, and instead she experienced a chaos in personal identity that could only be assuaged by focusing on studies along with occasional dating; each episode, of which, made her feel that she was cheating on Sam. She missed Sam desperately at times and there was no consistency in her life until she met Ben in her senior year. They dated casually for several months until one day she saw a high-profile wedding announcement involving Sam. In the moment, she closed the deal on Ben and they were married at the county clerk’s office Natalie was then four years old. Ben had been exciting, but controlling to the detriment of Natelie who grew to hate him. She was thirteen then when she ran away, after which child protective services removed her, placing her in foster care until Sara exploded, initiating a messy divorce. A year later, Natalie’s care was returned to Sara, but the wound was then impossible to heal. In the interim, Sara met David who was the psychologist at Natalie’s former high school. Natalie identified with David and they bonded, leading to marriage that Sara was sure would provide the needed sense of family. That marriage lasted four years after which Natalie worked and started college. But continuously and always, Sam was the dull ache in Sara’s mind and heart. After David, Sara and Natalie cohabited like roommates until the current moment. “Natalie, what I can tell you is that your father is the only man I have truly and unconditionally loved. Our parents pulled us apart and when I became pregnant with you, they erased even the possibility of your paternity. Honey, I have been tormented for twenty years. I tried with other men but that didn’t work. And now, I’m afraid, I have ruined both our lives. I’m terribly sorry. At least now you have Brian. Beyond myself, I want you to look carefully at Brian’s family because eventually he will become who he is and will emulate one of his parents traits and disposition. “Mom, I know your history with men. …be careful. Mom, right now, I have to know who my father is. Did he ever know that you were pregnant.” Yes, of course, that is why the forever lock on his paternity. You realize this secret has ruined me. OK, I’m ready to come out of the shadows for you Natalie, his name is Sam Hodges, and his father was in congress for many years…maybe still is.”
  14. Until One Day     “Will convinced me that it was over between you and me. It never occurred to me that you had no means of contact while you were there. My parents never told me about any contact with you. I only found your letters in my father’s desk a year ago. I knew I had hurt you terribly. Will is not intellectual. He’s a smooth touchy-feely kind of guy. He never asked me. he just seduced me one night. Somehow, that drew me in–the longing, the reaching for intimacy. ” “He must have known about me. Is it possible that he might have seduced you on purpose Her lips pursed and her eyes looked penetrating. The conversation paused. Martin got off his swing and knelt in front of her, forcing full eye contact. She appeared paralyzed. Martin broke the silence, “So, anyway, what happened when you found the letters/ did you read any? “I could not believe it  I hardened my heart and viewed it as a further consequence of my own actions. I have never told Will about any of this; but, I have confronted my parents and now have not talked with them for about a year. I never thought beyond myself, I guess. Specifically, I read two of them.” Chris was conflicted by her own words. “You should have read the last two…I told you I had bought the ring. Here—it’s yours.” Martin removed the silver necklace containing the ring from his neck, and placed it over her head. Chris freaked, twisting away from him and burying her head between her knees, her long brown hair spilling over each leg. f you have any…any residual feelings for me, wear this ring the way I have all these years. It will help guide you across the mine field of broken promises and deception you created. The ring says that I want you, regardless.”
  15. The End Game Of Love Anna Pierson met Jackson Palmer at freshman orientation the first week of college in Boulder Colorado. Anna ‘with the auburn hair’ was small in stature, wiry, vivacious and looked like she could do anything at any time. Jackson was chiseled, tall and lanky, with a head of black curley hair that never changed shape. They were both mountain kids; Anna from a farm near Snowmass Villiage, and Jackson from Aspen T.hey were put together on a ‘one seat left’ situation that morning, Jackson always running late. He plunked into his seat, jarring Anna who dropped her pen. They both reached for it simultaneously and their hands touched, Jackson now grasping slender manicured fingers extending from an incredibly soft palm. Their eyes connected and something happened that was destined to last a lifetime. Dorm dwellers, they met again that first evening, going to an open-mike, open-stage blues club.At one point Anna got up and went to the piano, playing and singing songs from the seventies. Applause kept her there for a half-hour and Jackson was entranced, and captivated beyond belief.

From then on, they were together in everything and were married the following summer to their parent’s chagrin, and Jenny was soon born. Several years plus summer school put them on the fast track toward graduation, immediately intending to apply for and enter Colorado Law School. Both applied and were accepted. That summer they made plans to practice law together in Pine Bluff Center, and Jackson made a down payment on a building containing a restaurant and also  a large upstairs apartment. They would remodel and incorporate their law office in that building as well. Jackson subsequently hired an experienced local, Hap Miller, to manage the restaurant until they finished law school and passed the Colorado bar exam.

During the first year of law school, Livia was born. but was deformed, having only one normal arm and one normal leg. In school and with two small children, particularly with one requiring constant care, Anna was pushed to the brink.  The relationship between Anna and Jackson became surreal, their minds seeking emotional relief as if intoxicated. They made a quick decision to give Livia up for adoption through Catholic Charities. The night after giving her away was perhaps the most emotional they would ever face as they needed each other desperately. The next day when they went to sign away their parental rights, Anna completely broke down. Jackson tried to comfort her but to no avail. That evening they struggled, Jackson trying to bring her back. Eventually they fell asleep in each other’s arms. When Jackson awoke she and Jenny were gone and he could not find her. Jackson moved to Denver close to the law school,  bought a small nearby weekly newspaper, and set up his law office . Heartsick, he eventually met Lainey and married her.. Anna and Jackson had not spoken or seen each other for twenty years. They were brought together inadvertently because two of their children, one from each family came to visit and announced their engagement. Learning of their sister, Livia, for the first time they searched for and found her.…and she came. The dilemma was that Anna and Jackson were still in love but were marred to different people.
